    Description:
“Close to Home”—a companion series to the popular “Great Decisions” foreign policy presentations—is a domestic issues series that utilizes a panel discussion format to explore a range of often-times difficult-to-discuss realities that have the potential to impact the daily lives of people within our community. From guns in schools to freedom of speech, we use this format to discuss matters that otherwise might go unaddressed. “Close to Home” will be convening in MPL’s Balkansky Community Room at 6:00 PM on the first four Monday evenings in October. The full schedule of topics is as follows:

    October 1 Guns in Schools
    October 8 Surviving Suicide
October 15 Elections: Rights, Issues, & Ethics
    October 22 Freedom of Speech

Each panel will bring together a unique array of experts for each topic, changing week-to-week in order to specifically address the topic at hand for an open, lively community discussion. We hope you will join us for these vital conversations. Admission is free!
  • Book and a Movie/“The Choice”
    Event date: October 22, 2018
    Event Time:07:00 PM - 09:00 PM
    Location:
    1118 Washington Street
    Manitowoc, WI 54220
    Description:
Life may seem perfect, until suddenly a tragic event occurs, revealing that even the most idyllic situation is fragile and can easily fall apart. And the choice in The Choice—both a Nicholas Sparks novel and the subsequent movie adaptation—is a heartrending one: if someone you love is in a seemingly permanent coma should you take them off of life support or move them to long-term care and hope for the best. That is the conundrum the protagonist faces in both versions of The Choice. However, one huge question remains—which version does a better job of putting this riveting, yet unsettling tale before the public: the book or the movie? You’ll have the opportunity to discuss this oft-debated point if you attend Manitowoc Public Library’s “Book and a Movie” at Lakeshore Cinema on Monday, October 22nd at 7 PM. Watch the movie and then participate in the discussion of the book versus the movie that follows. Books can be checked out prior to the screening at Manitowoc Public Library.
